BIOSIS Previews®. U.S.A.: BIOSIS. Contains abstracts and index information for over 5500 sources. Tracks conferences, books, patents, and journal articles. Most useful as single source for toxicology journal abstracts.

Carcinogenic Potency Project. U.S.A.: Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory of Berkley College. URL: http://potency.berkeley. edu/cpdb.html. Tracks the results of chronic, long-term animal cancer tests. Search by year, bioassay, and chemical structures.

EMBASE: Pollution and Toxicology. U.K.: Elsevier. Abstracts and citations for over 4000 biomedical journals from last ten years. Also available through other aggregate database providers.

International Pharmaceutical Abstracts. 1970- . Bethesda, MD: American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Twice monthly. Bibliographic coverage of over 700 worldwide pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and related health journals, plus all U.S. state pharmacy journals. Content unique to this database includes state pharmacy regulations and guidelines, pharmaco- and socioeconomics, pharmaceutical care, alternative and herbal medicines, and pharmacy meeting abstracts. Another key feature is the reporting of dosage and dosage forms in clinical study abstracts. Available online.

MDL® Toxicity Database. U.S.A.: MDL. This is a structure-searchable bioactivity database of toxic chemical substances. The database contains data from in vivo and in vitro studies of acute toxicity, mutagenicity, skin and eye irritation, tumor-igenicity and carcinogenicity, reproductive effects, and multiple dose effects. Information covered includes species of organism studied, tissue studied, route ofadministration, dose, endpoint, toxic effects descriptors, severity of response, CAS Registry Numbers, Beilstein Registry Numbers, chemical names and synonyms, molecular formula, and molecular weight. It includes references to the original publications reporting the toxicity data and to relevant review articles when applicable.

POISINDEX® System. U.S.A.: Thomson Micromedex. Used by all U.S. poison centers; links the ingredients within thousands of pharmaceutical and biological products to the treatment protocols for exposure. Also provides range of toxicity and clinical effects.

Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS)®. U.S.A.: MDL. Updated quarterly. RTECS is a compendium of toxicological data that was built and maintained by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) from 1971 through January 2001. MDL now produces the RTECS files using existing data selection criteria and rules established by NIOSH. Six categories of toxicity data are covered in the RTECS database: acute toxicity, tumorigencity, mutagenicity, skin and eye irritation, reproductive effects, and multiple dose effects. The RTECS file currently covers roughly 150K compounds with updates adding about 2000 new compounds per year.

Toxic Substances Control Act Test Submissions (TSCATS) Search. U.S.A.: Syracuse Research Corporation. URL: http:// esc.syrres.com/efdb/TSCATS.htm. Use CAS numbers or chemical structures to search for chemicals; use Study Type Search to narrow by acute or chronic, or even subacute toxicity alongside route of administration and organism.

TOXLINE®. U.S.A: National Library of Medicine. URL: http:// toxnet.nlm.nih.gov/cgi-bin/sis/htmlgen? TOXLINE. Updated regularly. This is the NLM's bibliographic database for toxicology. TOXLINE records provide bibliographic information covering the biochemical, pharmacological, physiological, and toxicological effects of drugs and other chemicals. It contains more than 3 million bibliographic citations, most with abstracts and/or indexing terms and CAS Registry Numbers.

TOXNET®. U.S.A.: National Library of Medicine. A collection of databases covering toxicology, hazardous chemicals, and related areas. Content includes: Hazardous Substances Databank; Integrated Risk Information System; GENE-TOX; Chemical Carcinogenesis Research Information System; Developmental and Reproductive Toxicology; Environmental Teratology Information Center; and ChemIDplus.
