FIGURE 4.10 Cases of measles in the United States by year. The most recent epidemic of measles, in 1989-1991, was probably due to vaccine failure and waning immunity in children immunized earlier with only a single dose of vaccine. In 1998, a total of 100 cases of measles was reported, a 27% decrease from the previous record low of 138 cases in 1997. Of these 100 cases, 71% came from international importation.
