One potential criticism of the NWCR is that we have just captured people for whom weight loss is easy and that NWCR participants are somehow different from most overweight and obese people who try to lose weight. Although we cannot conclusively determine whether or not this is the case, we do find that the majority of NWCR participants were overweight as children or adolescents and that most have at least one overweight or obese parent.
