As a lay user of alternative therapies, put it this way Another difference between holistic practitioners and allopathic practitioners is they're in it for money, it's a profession. We're in it for our love of people. Caring also means attending to the client (Hare 1993 Monson 1995 Sharma 1992). In Jenny's words, If you go for reiki or hypnotherapy you're getting the attention of somebody. The type of exercise performed depends on the desired goal. If a woman wants to build muscular strength, then resistance training is appropriate. Endurance training (walking, running, cycling, swimming) is required if a woman wants to improve her cardiovascular health and endurance. Yoga and t'ai chi are therapeutic alternatives to the rigors of strength and endurance training that can reduce stress, increase strength and flexibility, and improve cardiovascular parameters. A certified yoga or t'ai chi instructor should be consulted for more information on the styles of each.

Almost half of the people who spoke with me said the use of healing energy as a therapeutic modality is a distinguishing characteristic of alternative approaches to healing. These informants told me that everything on earth, as well as in the universe, is composed of energy that can be mobilized to heal. I believe, said Betty, and so many others believe, that we can, well, everything's energy, all life is energy. I believe that you can give energy to others, you can actually send it to others. Similarly, Hanna said, It's in the air that we breathe, it's energy, in the food that we eat, the vital life force. I've found that with yoga and reflexology and therapeutic touch, they all work, whether the person believes in them or not, because it comes from the practitioner trying to direct energy. Several of the people I spoke with first tried alternative therapies on the recommendation of family members. For example, Marie told me, I have a niece who has always been into alternative therapies and she said 'Why don't you try some of the remedies that are out there ' Similarly, Hanna's then father-in-law introduced her to yoga My ex-husband's father had bronchitis and he used to do these breathing exercises. And when I was about seventeen or eighteen I would just sit and watch him in the chair doing specific breathing, and I asked him what it was and he said it was yoga breathing. Non-pharmacological treatment of hypertension can be extremely effective. Regular physical activity, weight loss, smoking cessation, avoidance of alcohol, awell-balanced diet that is low in saturated fat and high in fiber, with moderate sodium restriction, and stress-management techniques (yoga, meditation) are important elements in a non-pharmacological approach.12,15

Also, when theory is induced from diverse data, the researcher is less likely to impose his her perceptions of reality on the phenomena at hand (Glaser and Strauss 1967 239). Thus the rigour of this study was enhanced through the use of a variety of sources of information in addition to the primary interview data. Because of the potential functional limitations of overweight and obese adults, alternative forms of physical activity may need to be considered. Yoga has been shown to improve range of motion and physical function, while reducing pain (33,34). However, there are limited data to support the addition of yoga to interventions to improve weight loss. Results from a 12-mo weight-loss intervention that included yoga as a complement to aerobic forms of physical activity and a reduction in energy intake demonstrate no improvement in weight loss when compared with interventions not including yoga (35). Another popular recommendation is to include aquatic forms of physical activity for overweight adults, as this may overcome functional limitations in overweight and obese individuals.
