What can I do to manage it now

Researchers have also examined whether people who believe they can control their diabetes are better off than those who do not see their diabetes as under their control and people develop a number of control-related beliefs with respect to their condition. A sense of control can be achieved either through psychological techniques such as developing a positive attitude, meditation, self-hypnosis or a type of causal attribution, or by behavioural techniques

The Nature Of The Clientpractitioner Relationship

As a lay user of alternative therapies, put it this way Another difference between holistic practitioners and allopathic practitioners is they're in it for money, it's a profession. We're in it for our love of people. Caring also means attending to the client (Hare 1993 Monson 1995 Sharma 1992). In Jenny's words, If you go for reiki or hypnotherapy you're getting the attention of somebody. Hanna, who practises yoga, spoke about caring and touching as hallmarks of alternative healing (Goldstein et al. 1987) Caring is a major difference. The doctors don't have time or patience. People need time and care, and that heals more than anything. I show that I care and I touch and hug.

Adopting A Healer Identity

Someone recommended hypnotherapy for something that was on my mind. I was complaining and this person started talking about it and so I decided to go and see about it and I was so completely taken with the process that I eventually ended up taking a course in certified clinical hypnotherapy and in neurolinguistics programming. Thoracoscopic Sympathectomy

A 22-year-old female undergraduate student who had had bilateral palmar hyperhydrosis since the fifth grade presented with hyperhydrosis that was refractory to noninvasive treatment. Her sweating was severe, to the point that it dripped and was thus incapacitating. Her symptoms become more severe primarily when she was anxious or upset, but they also increased with physical activity or elevated temperatures. She was unable to shake or hold hands in social settings. She had difficulty taking exams because the sweat made the paper wet. She was currently looking for a job and felt socially inhibited when being interviewed. Conservative therapy had failed, trying Drysol, Robinul, Drionic and roll-ons. Her hyperhydrosis had also proven refractory to hypnotherapy, biofeedback and iontophoresis. She denied any axillary hyperhydrosis. Her past medical history was negative for any major illnesses, and she denied any thyroid conditions, hypertension or diabetes. She had had no previous lung...

Problems That Occur During Sleep

Contrary to widespread belief, nightmares and bad dreams are not a sign of mental disorder. If anything, it is the concern about them that contributes to anxiety, depression, and other psychological problems. Those who suffer from nightmares and bad dreams often share the psychological trait of what psychiatrist Ernest Hartmann calls thin boundaries. People with thin boundaries are more open, sensitive, and vulnerable and, as a result, view more events as personally traumatic than do most people. Nightmare and bad dream distress has also been found to be more likely in those more susceptible to hypnosis, as well as those who are creative and absorbed in fantasy and esthetic experiences. Nightmares are also more frequent in people who have suffered trauma or abuse. But there are also people who have nightmares who fit none of these categories. Being distressed about nightmares and bad dreams is only weakly related to psychopathology, if at all, and is only weakly related to nightmare...

Counselling and dermatology

Psychological treatment for people affected by a skin disease have ranged from psychoanalysis to the use of hypnosis, and treatment methods have been reviewed for a number of skin diseases such as acne, psoriasis, eczema and virus-mediated diseases. The published literature in this field suggests that psychological interventions have proved to be effective for many different disorders. Psychological interventions, such as suggestion and hypnosis, have been shown to have the capacity to enhance immunity, and behavioural and cognitive interventions have also been used in the treatment of dermatological conditions. Behavioural interventions tend to focus on understanding and improving the ways in which people behave that might impact on their skin condition, whereas cognitive interventions tend to focus on the way people think about their skin condition. Cognitive behavioural therapy uses a mix of these ideas. One of the most effective therapeutic models in helping people cope with skin...

Also, when theory is induced from diverse data, the researcher is less likely to impose his her perceptions of reality on the phenomena at hand (Glaser and Strauss 1967 239). Thus the rigour of this study was enhanced through the use of a variety of sources of information in addition to the primary interview data. This information complements the interview data in a variety of ways (Shaffir and Stebbins 1991). For example, my own experiences as a user of alternative therapies provides me with insider awareness that reinforces the validity of this research (Douglas 1976). Further, the participant observation I conducted gave me a deeper familiarity with the various alternative therapies these informants used and practised, including acupuncture, aromatherapy, astrological healing, bagua, Chinese herbal medicine, chiropractic, Christian Science medicine, creative visualization, crystal healing, ear candling, Feldenkrais method, herbal medicine, homeopathy, hypnotherapy, massage,...
