Non Mainstream Spiritual Groups

Example, Betty was the only person who told me she first found out about alternative therapies through her membership in such a group I'm very deeply into spiritual growth and I ended up meeting a homeopathic doctor at a house where we held weekly spiritual get-togethers. However, nonmainstream spirituality is important, even though it was cited as a starting place by only one informant. It is important because, for several of the people who took part in this research, there is a connection between access to alternative health care and participation in non-mainstream religions. For example, Scott, who had been a follower of Buddhism for ten years at the time of the interview, said, I went and spent some time overseas in Thailand. Through being away, it kind of rekindled my interest in Buddhism and I came back really wanting to seriously practice meditation. And Randal, one of three informants who practised Wicca, told me this

What can I do to manage it now

Researchers have also examined whether people who believe they can control their diabetes are better off than those who do not see their diabetes as under their control and people develop a number of control-related beliefs with respect to their condition. A sense of control can be achieved either through psychological techniques such as developing a positive attitude, meditation, self-hypnosis or a type of causal attribution, or by behavioural techniques

Adopting A Healer Identity

I have taken the reiki and now I have my first and second levels There's another place you can go. I'm going there in August and they offer all kinds of self-awareness courses. I go down there for positive thinking courses, health courses. The one I went to was healing, channelling, and meditation.

The Denial Of The Flesh

For almost 50 years, Buddha trudged from village to village with his followers, preaching his gospel of enlightenment, a religion of infinite compassion. His was, however, a religion of intense self-effort, believing that through intense labor, a devotee might breach the seemingly endless cycle of death and rebirth and attain enlightenment and a permanent end to suffering. Their study of human anatomy convinced them that God had indeed designed man to be herbivorous. Vegetables provided more than enough of the essential nutrients and were not pathologically simulating like meat. Christian vegetarians were persuaded that they had indeed performed a service for humanity in bringing enlightenment to diet.

It is not simple to identify the founders of a discipline, especially one associated with such a rich and profound past as surgery. If the modern era began after Isaac Newton (1642-1727), the Enlightenment (1740-1800), and the French Revolution (1789-1799), modern surgery started in the 19th century. The chief accomplishments of that century in surgery were the development of anesthesia, the emergence of antisepsis, and the establishment of appropriate training for surgeons. Given those achievements, Long, Wells, Morton and Jackson in anesthesia, Lister in antiseptics, and Halsted in surgical training constitute the founders of modern surgery.

Is There An Alternative Therapy Type

More recent national surveys in Canada indicate that the highest rate of usership is among those in younger age groups (Achilles et al. 1999). More specifically, Ramsay et al. (1999) report that the most frequent participation in alternative therapies is amongst those eighteen to twenty-four years old. In addition, studies of users of these therapies tend to focus on the clients of chiropractors, naturopaths, and homeopathists. However, due to their youth, users of alternative therapies under thirty have fewer occasions to visit practitioners who specialize in muscular skeletal problems such as chiropractors. Moreover, young people may be unable to afford the fees charged by alternative practitioners such as naturopaths or homeopaths. Yet people under thirty years of age may well identify themselves as users of alternative therapies when they buy Echinacea, or practice yoga, or participate in meditation as forms of self-care. Thus age is more likely an indicator of consumption of...

Developmental tasks

To develop a sense of continuity of past, present, and future, and to transcend bodily changes. Failure to accomplish this is to experience a sense of nothingness and loss known as despair. This is more difficult for women who value their appearance over their accomplishments. Mid-life crises revolve around losses in critical life exchange values - physiological changes in a society that values youth and beauty.

Non-pharmacological treatment of hypertension can be extremely effective. Regular physical activity, weight loss, smoking cessation, avoidance of alcohol, awell-balanced diet that is low in saturated fat and high in fiber, with moderate sodium restriction, and stress-management techniques (yoga, meditation) are important elements in a non-pharmacological approach.12,15

Also, when theory is induced from diverse data, the researcher is less likely to impose his her perceptions of reality on the phenomena at hand (Glaser and Strauss 1967 239). Thus the rigour of this study was enhanced through the use of a variety of sources of information in addition to the primary interview data. This information complements the interview data in a variety of ways (Shaffir and Stebbins 1991). For example, my own experiences as a user of alternative therapies provides me with insider awareness that reinforces the validity of this research (Douglas 1976). Further, the participant observation I conducted gave me a deeper familiarity with the various alternative therapies these informants used and practised, including acupuncture, aromatherapy, astrological healing, bagua, Chinese herbal medicine, chiropractic, Christian Science medicine, creative visualization, crystal healing, ear candling, Feldenkrais method, herbal medicine, homeopathy, hypnotherapy, massage,...

The 19th Century

Increased attention to the nutritional, as opposed to the spiritual, aspects of vegetarianism was a reflection of the 18th-century Enlightenment's apotheosis of science as the indispensable method of investigation and proof. Though newly energized by the changing moral climate, vegetarianism still had to prove itself, nutritionally, if it hoped to make an impact on society's eating habits. Gaining nutritional legitimacy was actually a two-step process, the first being to demonstrate that humankind could live in health without consuming meat. It was recognized, of course, that many people went without meat by economic necessity, and were not dropping in their tracks. It was assumed, though, that such people

Stress management

Teaching people with diabetes methods for reducing stress and tension, including diaphragmatic breathing, muscle relaxation or meditation (see page 47 above). In addition, stress inoculation involves having people visualise stressful situations while practising their relaxation skills, therefore allowing them to practise managing stressors in a safe environment and improving their confidence in coping with stressful situations. These techniques are designed to reduce tension and associated changes that occur in your body in response to stressors and have been found to be very effective for numerous health-related problems, including diabetes.

Aging children

External stressors in any given woman's life may affect this time of transition. Single mothers who have been the sole parent of a leaving-home child may find this period of time particularly intense and painful. Women who depend on their child's presence for substantial income through child support, social security, or other benefits maybe at special economic risk. Handicapped or chronically ill women may depend on the presence of children for some measure of physical support and care, complicating the normal leave-taking process. Women who have been victims of domestic violence or abuse, or who live with an alcoholic or abusive partner, may depend on the presence of children as buffers, leaving them more vulnerable. Mother and child maybe at risk in any of these circumstances. Provider knowledge of family structure and supports, well in advance of expected normative departures, can facilitate helpful referrals for resources, supports, and the psychological readiness needed on the...
