ID/CC A 35-year-old male is diagnosed with ischemic heart disease following an evaluation for an episode of anginal chest pain; on the following day he is found doing push-ups prior to a medical consultation.
HPI On further interview, he states that there is "nothing wrong" with him and that "it's all just an overreaction."
Discussion The defense mechanism employed here is denial. The patient finds it difficult to believe he is ill and uses denial to cope with the difficult news of his illness.
