Environmental Aspects of Processing Lignin Modified Trees in the Pulp and Paper Industry

The world's forest area is estimated to be between 3.2 and 3.9 billion hectares, which equals around 30 of the Earth's land area. Although it is difficult to find a reliable value for worldwide timber consumption (Fenning and Gershenzon 2002), it is undisputed that the pulp and paper industry is one of the major consumers of timber, and thus has a significant influence on global environment and economy. In the production of paper, lignin needs to be removed with minimal damage to cellulose. Residual lignin in the wood fibers causes rapid discoloration and a low brightness level of the pulp (Chiang et al. 1988). Kraft pulping is the most frequently applied chemical pulping method for the production of high-quality paper (e.g. printing and writing papers). It is based on the use of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium sulfide (Na2S) to obtain high sulfidity, which enhances the rate of delignification by cleavage of the 5-O-4 linkages (predominant interunit linkage in native lignin)...

The hollows in living and dead branches located in the crown typically form when existing heartwood decay is exposed as branches are shed. The branches of eucalypts are continually shed as the crown expands. There are many theories as to why this is the case competition between branches for light (Jacobs 1955) geotropism occurring as branches extend and lean downwards (Jacobs 1955) the structural limitations of extending branches (Mackowski 1987) and the need for a tree to maintain a constant proportion of branches in its vascular networks (West et al. 1997). Branches can also be shed by physical damage associated with fires and windstorms. When the end, or leaf-bearing section, of a branch begins to lose vigour (for one or more of the reasons above), the flow of auxin is inhibited and epicormic shoots (sprouting branches appearing after injury) begin to develop along the length of the branch (Jacobs 1955) (Figure 4.5). Transgenic trees of Populus nigra from the Chinese Forestry Academy and transgenic lines of the hybrid poplar tree 741 from the Agricultural University Hebei are thus at present the only two transgenic forest trees approved for commercial use in China. For this reason some field trials were already established and supported by commercial growers. The above-mentioned field trial with different transgenic poplar clones in Hulodao is aimed at the elaboration of results concerning optimal planting structures and a production of trees with an estimated rotation time of ten years. In the studies carried out in these experimental plantations both effects of fertilization and a combination with agroforestry will be included. That means that, between the rows, agricultural crops such as groundnut (Arachis hypogea L.) will be planted. Decay-causing organisms gain access to heartwood exposed by damage to the tree. Fungi, often followed by invertebrates especially termites excavate the heartwood. Decay progresses through the pith, gradually radiating into the outer heartwood and branches of the crown, although decay can also progress from the branches into the main stem. Hollows form where heart-wood decay is exposed, usually when a branch breaks. The decayed material then either drains into the main stem of the tree or is excavated by fire, or by the activities of vertebrates and or invertebrates. To contain hollows than Silvertop Ash for two reasons branches are larger and will persist when decayed and larger branches will not be shed (and occluded) as efficiently, allowing greater opportunity for decay to establish in the heartwood, or creating more sites where heartwood decay will be exposed. The wood properties of different tree species also may influence hollow formation. Farmers have known for a long time that particular tree species make better fence posts than others because of greater resistance to decay. Wilkes (1985b) found differences between eucalypt species in their ability to resist decay in the heartwood. These differences were most pronounced in the outer (younger) heartwood, but not the inner (older) heartwood. Therefore, even species with high resistance are likely to eventually develop decay and hollows. Spine Boards

The long spine board is a combination litter, body splint, and rescue (extrication) device commonly used with casualties suspected of having spinal or pelvic injuries. A long spine board is usually made from 3 4-inch exterior plywood that has been sanded and varnished. The board usually measures about 18 inches in width and about 72 inches in length. Hand holes (which are also used for straps) are cut out along each side. Two parallel runners are attached lengthwise underneath the board. The runners permit easy sliding of the spine board and lift the board off the ground slightly to permit easy grasping of the hand holes. The ends of the board are rounded, beveled, and tapered to make it easier to slide the board beneath the casualty.
